2009 Baker at the exclusive Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club
This year’s event is the 5th anniversary of the David Baker Golf Classic. Maintaining the pattern of moving the tournament each year to experience different course styles, this year’s edition of the Baker will be showcased by one Perry Maxwell’s more famous designs. Built in 1911, OKCGCC remains one of the most exclusive clubs in the Southwest U.S. Many good and long time golfers in this part of the country have never had the opportunity to play this challenging and stately course. The club is very restrictive on the type and number of charity events allowed. We are privileged to hold the Baker on this exclusive property. In 2005, Coach Mike Broughton initiated the idea to create a top-level golf tournament to help fund the extra funds needed to fulfill the commitment to the young men playing basketball at Southern Nazarene University. This is a demanding sport at a time of the year that has critical academic significance. The tournament provides tutors, extra study aid, extraordinary transportation needs and on campus lodging between semesters for needy players. It also provides needed funding to bring games to the campus, eliminating the need for some travel. Most of all, it supports the commitment of the program to see every player graduate. The tournament has been very successful.
David Baker served at SNU from 1964 to 1974 as Coach and Athletic Director. His influence and leadership created an indelible personal impact on athletes and ushered in the expectation of excellence in small college sports at SNU. Read Dr Larry Mills’ account of the difference Coach Baker made in his life. “Coach David Baker was a Life Changer for Me”. Also, the San Francisco 49ers historian, Donn Sims wrote a significant piece you might find interesting. “The Original Baker Boy”.
